The "River-way" of Learning
Riverway Learning Community is a tuition-free, Minnesota public charter school that was established in 2000. We are sponsored by Audubon Center of the North Woods, an environmental learning center in Sandstone, Minnesota. With the intention of remaining a small school that effectively creates a family-type atmosphere and provides a more individualized education, Riverway serves students in pre-primary through twelfth grade and projects a maximum enrollment of 120 students. Beginning with approximately fifty students in 2000, enrollment has grown to approximately 100 students for the 2007-2008 school year.
The "River-way" of learning offers educational opportunities that provide a supportive learning environment that enhances self-worth, creativity, and responsibility. Learners develop new skills and a sense of empowerment as they take ownership and responsibility for their education. They work in multi-age settings, using an integrated curriculum that connects learning to life, and with individual learning plans that reflect personal learning styles. Students are actively engaged in learning through collaborative learning experiences where innovation, challenged thinking, problem solving, disciplined inquiry, and teamwork are utilized. Community service, comprehensive parent involvement, small class size (20:1 student-teacher ratio or less), diversity, and use of the community as a classroom enrich our learning community.
